The Power of Believing

In the video below, we witness 5th grader Dalton Sherman address a group of educators. In a well-constructed paragraph, please respond to the following two questions:

1. What do you think Dalton means when he asks, "Do you believe in me?"

2. In your opinion, what makes Dalton's speech so powerful?

  1. What I think Dalton means when he says "Do you believe in me" is he is saying if you don't believe in me you don't believe in yourself and if you don't believe in yourself then you can't do anything you want to. In my opinion Dalton's speech is powerful because he is only in fifth grade and when he spoke everyone listened and it made them think about how important it is for people to work hard and believe they can do it so everyone else does better.

  2. 1) I think Dalton means do the teachers believe that he can do well in school and do they believe he can make it to college and graduate. He is asking if they think and believe he can get good grades and that he will finish school and get a good job.

    2) I think Dalton’s speech was very powerful because to think only a fifth grader could go up there and speak in front of thousands of people is just amazing. I also think it was really powerful because he was encouraging the teachers and staff to care more about their job and if they do care and help students with class and home work that they can achieve in life.

  3. I think Dalton's speech was not that powerful. I think so because he was talking a lot about being able to do any thing. Also about believing. I think that is very corny and not true. Just because I believe and dream about being president doesn’t mean I will. Also he was talking about the teachers believing and a some of teachers don’t really care about kids that much. That is why I think that Dalton's speech was not powerful
